Still waiting for your big break?
...your waiting season isn’t wasted!
It’s been a while since I last wrote to you, and stepping into August, my birth month, gave me the chance to pause and reflect. Birthdays have a way of making you look back, not just at what you’ve achieved, but also at the seasons in between, when nothing seemed to be moving.
I remember a particular year when I was waiting for my big break in tech. Applications went unanswered, side projects felt unnoticed, and every day looked the same: study, apply, get rejected, repeat. It felt like standing still while everyone else was moving ahead. I questioned if the effort was even worth it.
What I didn't realize then was that the waiting season was quietly shaping me. The skills I was building, the resilience I was developing, and the connections I was nurturing were laying the groundwork for the opportunities that eventually came.
But here’s something I’ve also learned: what you choose to do in your waiting season matters more than you realize. The people who grow through waiting aren’t the ones who try to skip it; they’re the ones who maximize it. They invest in learning, sharpening their skills, and growing in ways that may not be visible yet.
And then, almost suddenly, it all clicks. The scattered efforts, the long nights, and the quiet consistency come together, and the picture becomes clear.
So if you’re feeling stuck or behind, know this: you are exactly where you need to be. That waiting season isn’t wasted time; it’s root‑building time.
Every tutorial, every bug fix, every rejection, every moment you choose to keep going, these are deposits into your future success. You’re not falling behind; you’re building depth.
Here are a few ways to embrace your waiting season:
Keep showing up: Even when it feels quiet, your consistency is planting seeds.
Use the pause wisely: Learn a new tool, improve a skill, or revisit old projects.
Stay connected: Lean into communities like DevCareer; we grow stronger together.
Shift perspective: Instead of asking, “Why not yet?” Try asking, “What can I learn here?”
This month, take one small, brave step: apply for that role, start that project, or commit to learning something new.
