March Forward🌸
Community updates, IWD celebration, a hackathon in the making, opportunities, and everything in between.
February is behind us, and March is already showing up with energy.
There is something about this time of year that makes people think about who helped them get here.
Maybe it is the season. Maybe it is the noise of March, the panels and the posts and the annual conversations about who is being left out and who is being let in. Whatever it is, people pause. And in that pause, they look back down the road they have walked.
Give to Gain is the theme for International Women’s Day this year, and it landed the way good themes do, not as a slogan, but as a mirror.
Because what we keep seeing in this community is exactly that tension. People with knowledge they did not realise was valuable, sitting on advice that could change someone’s trajectory, waiting to feel qualified enough to share it. And on the other side, people searching — not just for opportunities, but for proof. Proof that someone who looked like their situation, who started where they started, had found a way through.
The gap between those two people is almost always smaller than it looks. It is usually one conversation. One introduction. One honest account of how you got from there to here.
Giving does not require a title or a ten-year career. It does not require having all the answers. Some of the most useful things you can offer are the things that feel ordinary to you now — the lessons that came the hard way, the doors you learned to knock on, the names worth knowing. Someone, somewhere, does not have access to what feels unremarkable to you. That is where giving starts.
And receiving well is its own skill. Letting people in. Asking without apology. Being willing to be seen at the beginning of something. That takes courage too.
This month, we are celebrating both. The people who give and the people learning to receive. The ones who mentor quietly, refer generously, and show up consistently. And the ones on their way — doing the work, asking the questions, growing in public.
At DevCareer, this is how progress has always happened. Someone reaches back. Someone else steps forward. And over time, both of them move forward.
It does not matter where you are in your career. There is something you can give, and there is something you still need. Most of us are both at once.
That is the whole point.
And that is how we all gain. 🌸
