Oh, to be a genius is a thing, and believe me, Iâm trying. But more than anything, Iâve decided that June is a better time to brave up. Truly, thereâs no time left to hold back.
Last month at the BookClub by DevCareer, we read Show Your Work by Austin Kleon. A few things from that book stuck with me. One in particular:
âYou donât have to be a genius. You just have to be yourself, and share a little bit of that every day.â
You see, this idea of being a genius, the superhero, the magician, the one who always knows what theyâre doing, heeii, it can be a lot đ
We live in a world that encourages perfection. And nothing is more tempting than to wait until youâre âgood enough,â until your work feels complete, until the words are just right, the lighting is flattering, and the outcome makes sense. But hereâs the truth: many people never arrive at that perfect moment⌠because they never start.
(To be honest, Iâve been many people. But in May, I packed my bags and left that club.)
Because the real courage lies in showing your work - even when itâs not ready. Especially when itâs not ready.
So this June, I want you to think about that project sitting quietly in your notes app. That skill youâre afraid to practise in public. That idea you keep brushing aside because you donât feel âexpertâ enough yet.
Kleon argues that being a genius isnât the goal â being generous is. Letting people into your journey, however messy it looks, is an act of generosity.
Now, letâs pause. Because on the other side of this conversation are those who have already been doing the work. The ones whoâve become one with their craft. The quiet experts. The leaders. The consistent ones who make it look easy⌠because theyâve lived through the hard parts.
To you, the âOgasâ, the seasoned ones, I want to say, there is no better time to give yourself your flowers.
June is a good time.
Youâve been showing up. Youâve done the work without applause. But applause or not, your consistency deserves recognition, not just from the crowd, but first from you.
We forget to pause. We forget to reflect. We chase the next thing so fast we overlook this truth: You are already someone your younger self dreamed of becoming.
So, whether youâre starting from scratch, stuck in the messy middle, or standing tall on years of experience, this is your reminder to:
Share what youâre working on.
Speak about your process, not just the results.
Celebrate your courage to try.
Honour the strength it took to keep going.
